Voices of Women Leading the Way in Agriculture

This International Women's Day, join us in celebrating the resilience, innovation, and leadership of six remarkable women shaping the future in different parts of the world. Each shares her personal journey, revealing the challenges and triumphs encountered along the way, and offering valuable insights for future generations. 

When I joined Netafim a year ago, I was instantly drawn to an industry focused on something so vital: growing our food. I was equally inspired by the many women making their mark in this field. For International Women's Day, I'm thrilled to share the stories of six women from across the globe. I hope their stories will inspire you as much as they have inspired me.

Melissa Lilze: Nurturing Growth in the U.S.

Growing up surrounded by the vibrant farming landscapes of California, my passion for agriculture was ignited early. At Cal Poly University, while pursuing agricultural communication, I envisioned a future in education. However, my true calling was in the field, not the classroom. Joining Netafim USA nine years ago as a sales rep, I managed one of the largest U.S. territories, progressively climbing to my current role as Senior Sales Director for North America. It’s a first for a woman at Netafim USA and I’m proud of what it might mean for others coming up in this industry.

Balancing this demanding role with raising two young daughters has taught me the importance of support systems, especially from my husband, who has been a cornerstone in this journey. My approach to leadership is built on empathy, active listening, and an honesty that resonates deeply with our clients and colleagues alike. These qualities have not only helped me navigate the industry but have also allowed me to mentor others effectively.

Deniz TekeIi Özler: Cultivating Legacy and Innovation in Turkey

I am deeply rooted in the rich agricultural heritage of Adana, managing lands that have been in my family for generations. As a fourth-generation farmer, I was taught the value of hard work and the importance of land stewardship from a young age. After studying linguistic sciences, I returned to oversee our orchards and fields, combining traditional practices with innovative technologies. This blend of old and new has not only increased our efficiency but also honored the legacy of the women before me.

The transition to more sustainable practices, such as drip irrigation and digital farming in partnership with Netafim, has been both challenging and rewarding. My father, initially skeptical of new technologies, now sees their benefits. We've increased yields while conserving resources, a testament to the power of embracing change.

The support of my family has been crucial for me, but your drive can come from within. Agriculture might seem challenging, but no obstacle is too great if you have the passion and the courage to pursue your dreams. I am proud to lead by example, hoping to inspire other women to join and innovate in agriculture.

Shuxi Sun: From Pharma to Farm Life in China

I had no farming background growing up, and for years, my younger brother and I worked in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2021, we returned to our family home in a village in Shandong Province and took an opportunity to rent a 66 Ha agricultural plot. With no prior experience, we had to learn everything from scratch, visiting neighboring farms and consulting with local agronomists.

In 2023, after installing a Netafim drip irrigation system, our yield broke local records. This experience solidified my commitment to agriculture. Our farm was the first to adopt drip irrigation and so, quite often, we have visitors from larger farms and government offices who come to learn about our business and operations.

I love the connection to the land—there's an unimaginable peace that comes from nurturing the earth and seeing the tangible results of your labor. My vision for the future is to continue improving our yield and quality, collaborating with Netafim to enhance our operations.

Alana Deacon: Empowering the Next Generation of Farmers in the UK

From the vibrant flower farms of Kenya to the forefront of the UK’s agricultural sector, my journey in agriculture has been one of continuous learning and adaptation. Working alongside my father on a flower farm, I developed a love for the land and a vision for the future. At university, my passion for agriculture deepened as I explored various aspects of crop production, eventually leading me to a leadership role in a major British soft fruit company.

Today, I am dedicated to empowering the next generation of farmers through initiatives like NextGen Fruit Group, which fosters collaboration and innovation among young agricultural professionals. The group provides a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, ensuring that the future of farming is as bright as its past.

To the young women eyeing a career in this vibrant field, I say this: Don’t let any opportunity pass you by. Priscila Silvério Sleutjes: Advocating for Farmers and the Environment in Brazil

Born into a Dutch community in Brazil, where agriculture is both a lifestyle and a legacy, I grew up witnessing the transformative impact of innovative farming practices. My father, an agronomist, was a pioneer in introducing sustainable irrigation technologies, which inspired my own career in agronomy. Today, I advocate for sustainable agriculture and water management, representing farmers' interests at various levels of government and policy-making.

In addition to advocacy, I work alongside my husband on our family farm, integrating cutting-edge technologies like Netafim's drip irrigation to enhance productivity and sustainability. My dual role as an advocate and farmer enriches my understanding of the industry’s challenges and opportunities.

To women considering a career in agriculture, I say: Agriculture is way more than just taking care of crops. With globalization, technology, and innovation, we as women, can work throughout the entire agribusiness chain, and there are many opportunities where women fit in very well too. So if you enjoy working in agriculture, go for it for sure!

Carmel Porat: Leading Agricultural Innovation in Israel

As an R&D Agronomist at Orbia Netafim, I am privileged to lead research and development efforts, helping push the boundaries of what's possible in farming. One of the most advanced “playgrounds” for us R&D agronomists, is the Precision Agriculture Center, a one hectare park, which serves as a dynamic testing ground for new agricultural technologies, and where we’re able to optimize every aspect of crop growth. From low-flow irrigation systems to advanced climate control technologies, our work is dedicated to improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

For young women interested in science and agriculture, this field offers endless opportunities to innovate and make a tangible impact on the world. For me, Every day brings new excitement and projects, and it's truly inspiring to step into an 'office' that is always evolving.

This International Women's Day, let's celebrate Melissa, Deniz, Shuxi, Carmel, Alana, Priscila, and all the other women in agriculture. Their stories showcase how diversity and out-of-the-box thinking can profoundly shape the agricultural sector. These women aren't just leaders in their fields and careers; they're also role models who inspire the next generation of women leaders in agriculture. I'm proud to be part of an organization that champions such incredible women.
